The Calm Violence of Dreams is defined in Cape Town’s cosmopolitan neighborhoods - Observatory, Mowbray and Sea Stage - where subcultures thrive and alternative lifestyles are tolerated. The plot revolves around Tshepo, students at Rhodes, who gets confined to a Cape City mental organization after an bout of ‘cannabis-induced psychosis’. He escapes but is usually returned to a healthcare facility and completes his rehabilitation, earns his discharge - and promptly terminates his research. The relationship along with his flatmate deteriorates and Tshepo loses his work at the Waterfront. He today functions as a waiter and shares a flat with a recently released prisoner. The novel explores Tshepo-Angelo’s arriving at awareness of his sexuality, sexual orientation, and place in the globe. Desperate for money, he finds just work at a male therapeutic massage parlour, using the pseudonym Angelo.
