This text takes the student with a background in undergraduate physics and mathematics towards the abilities and insights necessary for graduate work in theoretical physics. The publication is founded on the author’s comprehensive teaching knowledge. Calculations are carried through in enough fine detail for self-research, and case histories illustrate the interplay between physical insight and mathematical formalism. They are important phenomena within their own correct, but this research of the partial differential equations describing them also prepares the college student for more complex applications in many-body physics and field theory. The goal is to develop the habit of dialogue with the equations and the workmanship this fosters in tackling the issue. The writer uses Green’s features to explore the physics of potentials, diffusion, and waves.
