First published in 1957, this classic research has been reissued in a paperback version which includes yet another chapter bringing the materials up to date. The writer formulates the physical properties of crystals systematically in tensor notation, presenting tensor properties when it comes to their common mathematical basis and the thermodynamic relations between them. Tensors of higher ranks and matrix strategies are after that introduced as natural advancements of the idea. The mathematical groundwork can be laid in a dialogue of tensors of the 1st and second ranks. An identical design is followed in talking about thermodynamic and optical elements.
